It is true that learning Vi/Vim – a well-known text editor in the Linux ecosystem, is not as easy as learning Nano or Emacs, as it requires a little effort which is worthwhile.
There is a better way. We can run:set paste, which tells Vim to be in paste mode. In this mode, when you’re in insert mode and paste in, Vim will not perform any indenting itself, and let what you’re pasting in dictate it. You can then run:set nopaste to turn off paste mode. This is good, but it’s still too many steps for me: Exit. Insert mode is for inserting the text directly, in this mode vim is similar to other more simple text editors. To enter insert mode press i in normal mode. To leave it press (escape key). Command-line mode is for running more complex commands like saving the file and exiting vim.
In order to exit Vim, you can exit while you are in either the ex mode or in the command mode. You cannot exit Vim when you are in input mode. Exiting from ex mode. You need to be sure that you are in the Command mode. To do that, simply press the Esc key. Go to the ex mode by pressing the: key. Use any of the following combinations in ex mode. Vim is shipped by default with many operating systems (including most Linux distributions and Mac OS X), so I suggest you take a proactive approach to learning it. Just launch a terminal and type ‘vim’ to get started. With some learning, Vim can be more powerful than many graphical IDEs. To save and exit, use:x. To quit without saving, use:q. If you had made a change you wanted to discard, use:q! Configure vim to your liking. You can edit your /.vimrc file to configure vim to your liking.
